A Doctor-Turned-Designer Modernizes a Philadelphia-Area Kitchen

Kendra Feeney started her career as a medical doctor. She made the transition to interior designer after doing her own house flip and falling in love with the design process. It turns out the move from doctor to designer is a pretty seamless one, both are about careful listening and problem-solving. She now runs Brick House Designs in the Philadelphia area and specializes in residential work. She recently used FORM for a project she did for a former med school classmate who wanted a modern kitchen with sleek lines and bright pops of color.

What were you looking for
in your kitchen renovation?

My clients really wanted those sleek, modern lines and a clean look, but they also wanted some fun color. And so I started researching cabinets that would fit the bill and FORM came up. The selection you all have perfectly lined up with what my clients envisioned. We were immediately drawn to the aqua fronts and the oak reproduction. We thought it was such an elegant-yet-fun color combination.

From a functionality perspective, we wanted it to be both a functional kitchen for cooking, but also entertaining. The peninsula with seating is a great example. This provides a great landing zone for people coming in from the pool to sit and have a drink or bite. It can also double as a bar area or a place for staging or prepping food and drinks. Across from the peninsula we created a great bar moment to add to the functionality.

I love the colors – the two-tone cabinets create such a nice effect. I also love the built-in panels on the refrigerator.

What are your favorite moments in this kitchen?

I love the colors – the two-tone cabinets create such a nice effect. I also love the built-in panels on the refrigerator. I also love that whole wall of cabinets. It just is so pretty. And such a nice moment, and tons of storage. And then I like the fact that we were able to customize the inserts and the drawers, and we were able to customize the corner cabinets with the pull-out functionality. We really feel like we got everything we wanted from a functionality and storage perspective.

What advice would you give to someone renovating a kitchen?

Kitchens are complex. There are a lot of decisions to make, and a lot of elements to coordinate. I would advise working with a designer as early on in the process as possible, which is why it’s great that FORM provides expert designers on your projects. And really figure out all the details – the vision of what you really want – before you start getting bids from contractors. Making changes during the build process can cause a lot of headache.

"We believe that good design improves people's lives. We focus on personalization, performance, and peace of mind."
