Modern Michigan Kitchen: Meet Janet Corona of COGA Design

Janet Corona from COGA Design shares a recent lakeside project in Novi, Michigan, where her clients wanted to make the most of their stunning lake views—and now they can enjoy them right from their kitchen sink. She reflects on her approach to modern design and the challenge of moving beyond the traditional white and blue shaker cabinets so common in the area, delivering a kitchen that balances sleek design with everyday ease.

COGA Design works with FORM Kitchens

As a Barcelona-born Architectural Designer married to a German Engineer, it’s no surprise that Janet brings both European design sensibilities and a deep local knowledge to her work.  "I'm an architectural designer with a bachelor's degree in architecture." Janet explains. "While my background is in architecture, my work focuses heavily on interiors."

Based in Rochester Hills, Michigan, her firm COGA Design specializes in kitchens, bathrooms, and interior renovations that emphasize clean lines and contemporary aesthetics.

Janet positions her business primarily as a design service and project management service. "I work with clients on their vision and then refer them to various cabinet options based on their style preferences and budget. For clients seeking modern design at an accessible price point, FORM offers a compelling option."

European Influence

"Having lived, worked and traveled extensively in Europe, I understand what makes European cabinetry special," Janet shares. "The hardware, the engineering, the attention to detail—these elements create kitchens that not only look beautiful but function beautifully too."

She acknowledges the unique regional challenges: "In Michigan, we face unique hurdles when introducing modern European cabinetry. Some clients love the sleek look but question the materials, particularly when comparing to traditional solid wood options. However, those who understand European cabinet engineering appreciate the superior functionality and hardware quality."

What Modern Design Really Means

"Modern design means moving away from traditional elements," Janet notes. "It's about flat accent doors, floor-to-ceiling cabinets, recessed lighting, and clean lines. While we often work with warm, neutral color palettes, some clients opt for bolder choices."

For Janet, however, modern design transcends mere aesthetics. "It's about creating spaces that work better, last longer, and bring joy to daily life," she emphasizes.

Her FORM Kitchen Project

For this lakeside project in Novi, Michigan, Janet’s clients wanted to make the most of their stunning lake views — and break away from the traditional white and blue Shaker cabinets so common in the area.

The final design embraces contrast. "The kitchen itself is quite moody," Janet explains, "but it's balanced by white walls and light floors throughout the rest of the house. It creates this beautiful tension between traditional and contemporary elements."

Key design elements include:

- Handleless base and wall cabinets in a mix of FORM’s sophisticated Walnut Reproduction and Mineral Green.
- Recessed lighting throughout.
- An integrated paneled hood for clean, minimal lines.
- An island with internal storage, integrated appliances, and seating for four.
- High-performance organization, like swivel pull-outs for easy access.

Design Tips for Your Own Space

Janet offers thoughtful advice for homeowners considering a modern kitchen:

- Start with a clear vision of how you'll use the space.
- Consider the balance between modern elements and your home's existing style.
- Focus on quality cabinetry and functionality.
- Don't be afraid to incorporate bold design choices in measured ways

"The most successful projects find ways to honor the home's existing character while introducing modern elements that enhance daily life," Janet shares.

For designers like Janet, modern kitchen design isn't just about aesthetics—it's about creating functional, forward-thinking spaces that respect architectural heritage. FORM has really enjoyed this thoughtfully designed project in Novi and we wish Janet well on her next projects.
