What were you looking for in your kitchen renovation?

My husband and I purchased our 1850s farmhouse about three years ago and the first thing we wanted to do was renovate the kitchen. Unfortunately, a leaking roof and several other projects had to be addressed first. When it was finally time to get started on the kitchen, we knew we needed to design a more functional layout as well as bring in modern appliances and cabinetry.

I love to cook but more than that I wanted the kitchen to be a space where people can gather - talk while snacking or making a drink.

What do you love to do in your kitchen?

I love to cook but more than that I wanted the kitchen to be a space where people can gather - talk while snacking or making a drink. Everyone always gathers in the kitchen - I figured that you might as well lean into that! People always hover around our kitchen island.

Be realistic about how you’re going to use your kitchen. Plan for the life you live and not the life you want to live.

What are your favorite features?

We just love the designs of the cabinets with the pull out drawers. We also get a real kick out of people not being able to find our paneled fridge because it seamlessly blends in with our new pantry. We also really love having a big farmhouse sink in front of the window - I get to stare out at the yard while cooking and cleaning!

What advice would you give to someone renovating a kitchen?

Be realistic about how you’re going to use your kitchen. Plan for the life you live and not the life you want to live. Make sure you have storage for the things you have and a layout conducive to the way you work in your kitchen. It’s so easy to dream up a kitchen that looks great but when you get to using it it doesn’t really function for you.
